Fence Line Weed Control Success Story: Vegetation Management At Municipal Airport

Vegetation Management for East Georgia Regional Airport

Improvements at Greene County Regional Airport, Union Point Hwy, Greensboro, GA

Project Area: 200 Acre Airport Site, Perimeter Fencing Weed Control

Greene County Regional Airport, located in Eastern Georgia Near Lake Oconee, is a crucial hub for general aviation with a 5,000+ ft. runway supporting over 10,000 annual aircraft operations. As airport utilization continues to increase, maintaining clear visibility of fencing is vital for safety & operational efficiency.

Greene County Regional Airport 3J7 is a public-use GA airport on 165 acres of county owned land located three miles northeast of Greensboro GA.

After the county’s road department manually cleared invasive overgrowth, Greene County Board of Commissioners sought a long-term vegetation management program with VegClear to protect the integrity of the airport's perimeter fencing & reduce labor costs within their maintenance program. Key operational aspects of the herbicide application program were coordinated with onsite management group, Spirit Aviation.

Greene County Regional Airport 3J7 is a county-owned public-use airport located three miles northeast of the central business district of Greensboro, a city in Greene County, Georgia. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2009-2013 classifies it as a general aviation airport.

Project Challenges:

Greene County Regional Airport’s perimeter fencing spans over three miles, recently undergoing mechanical brush clearing & major repairs. Leading Up to the Engagement, Significant Capital Investments Were Made Airport Management, Removing Overgrowth & Replacing Large Fence Sections.

  • Airport Property Overrun by Vegetation: Brush, Weeds, Vines, & Kudzu.

  • Mechanical Clearing Efforts to Control Overgrowth Cumbersome & Costly.

  • Treatment Approach Necessary, Integrating Strategic Herbicide Application.

  • Emphasized the Need for Proactive Maintenance to Mitigate Future Costs.

Overgrown weeds and wild roadside vegetation at municipal airport in Greensboro, Georgia. Eradication efforts are helping eliminate invasive kudzu along airport perimeter fence.

Solution: VegClear designed a site-specific airport weed control program:

The scope included initial post-emergent burndown treatments, long term bare ground growth control, gravel & fence line weed control spraying, & targeted herbicide applications using backpack & ATV spraying equipment. Preemergence treatments were applied to prevent weed resurgence. The treatment program focused on maintaining a vegetation-free path on both sides of the perimeter fencing.

Implementation: Products & Herbicide Application

Starting in Early Spring, VegClear's team executed the vegetation management plan in alignment with airport schedules & safety protocols.

Herbicides were applied strategically based on treatable acreage, manufacturer labels, local topography, climate conditions, & scheduling restrictions. Spraying was carried out during non-peak air traffic hours to ensure safety & open communication with airport authorities. Licensed technicians adhered to strict quality control measures.

Coordination with airport management firm Spirit Aviation (contracted by the Greene County Airport Authority) was key in executing the program.
